A Bahamian court cleared the way for Anna Nicole Smith’s ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead to leave the Bahamas with their infant daughter, rejecting an appeal by Smith’s estranged mother. The Phil Spector murder trial began in Los Angeles Superior Court, more than four years after actress Lana Clarkson was found fatally shot at his California mansion. Spector arrived at court surrounded by bodyguards and was greeted by a media frenzy. Police say Spector, who is charged with second-degree murder, initially admitted to the February 2003 killing, a statement which he says was made under duress. Jackson outlined what he called a pattern of behavior in which Spector would become exceedingly drunk, take a woman to one of his residences, refuse to let her leave and then threaten her with a gun when she refused to stay. He said Spector is someone “who, when he’s confronted with the right circumstances, when he’s confronted with the right situations, turns sinister and deadly.”"The evidence is going to paint a picture of a man who on February 3, 2003, put a loaded pistol in Lana Clarkson’s mouth and shot her to death,” Jackson told the jury. The prosecutor showed a photograph of Clarkson slumped in a chair, her face covered with blood. Defense attorney Bruce Cutler told jurors that investigators leaped to the conclusion that it was a murder.”The evidence will show that back on Feb. 3 of 2003, before they even had a cause of death, let alone a manner of death, they had murder on their mind.” Cutler said. Spector listened glumly during the televised proceeding as the prosecution laid out the murder case against him.”Lana Clarkson was the last of a long line of women victimized by Phillip Spector over the years,” the prosecutor said.It took about eight months for authorities to charge Spector with murder. They are proceeding on a theory of “implied malice,” alleging he did not intend to kill Clarkson but caused her death by reckless behavior and taking an extreme risk.If convicted of second-degree murder, he could face 15 years to life in prison.

Hugh Grant has been arrested and questioned by police after allegedly attacking a paparazzo. The incident took place when Grant became angry at photographer Ian Whittaker for taking his picture in front of his London home. Grant allegedly kicked Whittaker three times and swore at him as Whittaker attempted to photograph him. Whittaker alleges Grant then picked up a large container of baked beans and threw them at him, leaving him “bruised” and “battered” and covered in the sticky mess. Grant’s lawyers said an incident had taken place and was now under investigation. A police spokeswoman did not confirm that it was Grant who was arrested, but did confirmed that a man had been arrested and questioned at a central London police station after an allegation of assault. He was bailed out and must return in May.

City Attorney spokesperson Frank Mateljan said that Francis was at a birthday party in Los Angeles this past January when he allegedly touched an 18-year-old girl on the breast, buttocks and inner thigh. The woman allegedly repeatedly asked Francis to stop. Francis will be arraigned May 22. If convicted, he faces a maximum six months in jail and a $2,000 fine. Francis has a list of legal problems at the moment. He’s currently in a Florida jail serving 35 days for contempt of court. He faces other charges as well.

Nelson and tour manager David Anderson, along with Nelson’s sister, Bobbie Nelson, and two drivers, were issued citations on Sept. 18.State troopers said they found marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms on Nelson’s tour bus during a commercial-vehicle inspection on Interstate 10. State District Judge Paul deMahy fined Nelson and Anderson $1,024 each and put both on probation for six months. As part of a plea agreement, the citation against Bobbie Nelson was dismissed.St. Martin Parish Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars said he dismissed the citations against the two drivers because there was no indication they “had anything to do with the contraband.” Word spread quickly that Nelson was in the southern Louisiana town, and a crowd of about 25 fans gathered outside to wait for him after his brief court appearance. When he emerged, Nelson obliged the fans, shaking hands, signing scraps of paper and posing for photographs. “Thank ya’all,” he said, waving as he climbed into a waiting car.

A Florida judge whom Joe Francis called “out of his mind” and “a judge gone wild” may have bought the ‘Girls Gone Wild’ producer an extra year in federal jail by refusing to cut his 35-day sentence by just five days. Francis’ lawyer begged District Court Judge Richard Smoak to cut the 35-day sentence on federal contempt of court charges to 30 days. The lawyer explained that having jail time of over 30 days on Francis’ record would change the sentencing guidelines in his federal case should he be convicted on tax evasion charges. This could tack on up to a year of extra time in a federal penitentiary for Francis as a result. Judge Smoak disagreed, and left the sentence at 35 days . Francis faces up to 100 years in Florida prison if convicted on all the felony charges he faces in that state. Those charges include use of an underage child in sexual performance and bringing contraband cash and drugs into his county jail cell. Marshals were directed by another judge to take custody of Francis the moment he’s released from his current sentence on May 15.
