The body of Katoucha Niane, one of the first African women to attain international stardom as a model and a vocal opponent of female genital mutilation, was found in the Seine River, police said. Known simply as Katoucha, the former top model for Yves Saint Laurent and other top designers was found near the Garigliano bridge in Paris, judicial police in Paris said. An autopsy showed no signs of foul play, pointing to the possibility that the she may have fallen accidentally into the river, they said. Katoucha had been missing since January and was last seen returning home from a party. She lived in a houseboat near Paris’ Alexandre III bridge, and her handbag was later found on the boat. The Guinean-born model ran away to Europe at 17 and wanted to be a model. Her big break came when Jules-Francois Crahay, then the designer at Lanvin, spotted her in a line-up. They hired her as a fitting model. Her first catwalk modeling was for Thierry Mugler at the start of the 1980s.After quitting the runway, she turned to speaking out actively against female circumcision, describing her own experience at age 9 in a book, “Katoucha, In My Flesh,” which was published last year. “I will never get the incomparable pain out of my head,” she wrote in the book, which she dedicated to her three children. Vanity Fair’s fashion and style director, Michael Roberts, said Katoucha was “one of those girls who used her fame to spotlight the misfortunes of others.”"She always seemed so gracious and very lovely,” he said. “She was sunny and she was bright, and I liked her a lot.”

Pamela Anderson is seeking an annulment, rather than a divorce, from husband Rick Salomon. Anderson is seeking to annul the two-month marriage based on fraud. No other details were available, and Anderson’s publicist would not comment. In court papers filed in Los Angeles, California, Anderson asked the court not to award spousal support and to keep her and Salomon’s income and property separate. Anderson also filed a request to have a retired judge handle the annulment proceedings, a common practice in celebrity split-ups as it keeps matters private and out of the court. Anderson and Salomon were married Oct. 6 in Las Vegas and separated Dec. 13. He’s best known for making a sex videotape with then-girlfriend Paris Hilton and was previously married to actress Shannen Doherty. Anderson was previously married to singer Kid Rock and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee.

Lindsay Lohan’s father refuses to look at nude photos of her posing as Marilyn Monroe. Michael Lohan refuses to see the pictures of Lindsay in the new issue of New York magazine, but accepts it was “her decision” to agree to the shoot. He said: “I’m not going to look at the photos, that’s my daughter! But Lindsay is an adult, and she knows the direction she wants to take her career. It’s her decision.” However, Michael did recognize that being asked to recreate Bert Stern’s famous “Last Sitting” photos of Marilyn Monroe was a huge honor for Lindsay. He added, “The fact that the photographer Bert Stern who did Marilyn Monroe’s pictures would ask Lindsay to re-create them, that’s an amazing thing.” Michael also hopes Lindsay doesn’t fully follow in Marilyn’s footsteps, because the blonde iconic star died of a drugs overdose aged 36. He said: “I pray there are no parallels to her and Marilyn Monroe’s destiny.” Meanwhile, Lindsay’s mother Dina has lent her support to her daughter, saying the photos were “tastefully done.” She said: “It was very tastefully done. I respect the photographer as an artist, so I look at them artistically. For him to call Lindsay 46 years later and to say can you recreate these photos is an honor.” She added, “I looked at it as art, and as Lindsay doing a character.”"So I don’t look at them like it’s Playboy, she was being a character. If you look at it that way, you can look at it as a mother.”

Lindsay Lohan is following in the footsteps of the most famous blonde bombshell of them all, Marilyn Monroe. In the latest issue of New York magazine, Lohan poses nude for photographer Bert Stern in a recreation of one of Monroe’s most famous photo shoots, done shortly before she died. Stern photographed Monroe in 1962 at the Hotel Bel-Air in California, six weeks before she was found dead from an overdose of barbiturates. Those images for Vogue magazine feature Monroe in next to nothing, posing nude with some scarves and jewelry as her accessories and sipping champagne. Stern recreated those images with Lohan at the same hotel, with Lohan wearing a blond wig and not much else. In the essay accompanying the photos, Lohan, who admitted to a serious interest in Monroe, said deciding to do the photo shoot was easy.”I didn’t have to put much thought into it. I mean, Bert Stern? Doing a Marilyn shoot? When is that ever going to come up? It’s really an honor,” she said. Lohan described Monroes suicide as “tragic” and said it, along with the Jan. 22 death of actor Heath Ledger from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, are both prime examples of what this industry can do to someone. Stern said that he found women like Lohan and her tabloid companions Paris Hilton and Britney Spears interesting.”They’re girls that draw attention to their notoriety and their celebrity through their behavior,” he said. He said he thought the photo shoot would be good for Lohan, giving her the chance to portray herself as a grown-up. He also lauded her for her willingness to do it in the nude.”I thought she was a natural, not at all squeamish,” he said.

The divorce hearing between Paul McCartney and Heather Mills will continue a second week, after a judge allotted extra time for the couple’s court case. The hearing had been scheduled to end, but officials at London’s Royal Courts of Justice said the case before Justice Hugh Bennett would continue into next week. Mills and McCartney separated in 2006 after four years of marriage and have since traded blows in the media while trying, and failing, to agree on divorce terms. The hearing was called to decide on Mills’ share of the former Beatle’s fortune, estimated at as much as $1.6 billion. Media reports suggest that McCartney has offered Mills about $50 million and that she is seeking at least double that amount. The couple have been in court every day this week, but few details have emerged. Divorce proceedings are heard in private, and the courtroom is closed to journalists and the public. McCartney has hired lawyer Fiona Shackleton, and Mills, who fired her legal team late last year, is representing herself. After the hearing ends, Bennett is expected to take several weeks to consider his settlement. The terms will not become public unless it is challenged in the Court of Appeal, or either of the parties chooses to reveal details. The couple married in June 2002, and their daughter was born in October the following year. They announced their separation in 2006, and McCartney filed for divorce alleging “unreasonable behavior” by his wife.

A Superior Court commissioner gave Britney Spears’ father the power to fire her business manager, according to court documents. Commissioner Reva Goetz also ordered Howard Grossman to turn over all documents, records and assets relating to Britney Spears to James Spears, who is the court-appointed conservator of his daughter and her estate. The order came the day after Goetz held an emergency closed-door hearing on a motion brought by Spears’ father and her lawyer Andrew Wallet, who is part of the conservatorship. Spears parents said they feared their daughters life was at risk after she was released early from a hospital psychiatric ward. Spears’ affairs were placed under a temporary conservatorship after she was taken to UCLA Medical Center on Jan. 31 under heavy police escort. Conservatorship are granted for people deemed unable to care for themselves or their affairs. The conservatorship lasts until Feb. 14. Spears was discharged from the hospital over the recommendation of her psychiatrist and against the wishes of her parents. Her parents said they were extremely disappointed she was released and they said they were deeply concerned about her safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. Spears slipped out of the hospital unnoticed by the pack of paparazzi that follow her every move in public, but they gave chase later when she left her home behind the wheel of her Mercedes-Benz and eventually showed up at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and other prescription drugs, the New York City medical examiner said. “The cause of death was acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine,” spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement. The medical examiner’s office only provided generic names, so it is unknown whether he took generic or brand-name drugs. Police had said they found six types of prescription drugs, including sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, in Ledger’s apartment. Borakove wouldn’t say what concentrations of each drug were found in Ledger’s blood, or whether one drug played a greater part than another in causing his death.”What youre looking at here is the cumulative effects of these medications together,” she said. The ruling comes two weeks after Ledger was found dead in the bed of his SoHo apartment. Ledger’s family returned to their hometown of Perth, Australia to prepare for his funeral. In a statement released through Ledger’s publicist, his father, Kim, said Wednesday: “While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heaths accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.”

Heath Ledger’s family evaded scores of photographers as they returned to Perth with his body following his death in a Manhattan apartment last month. Several security guards and police officers watched as Ledger’s father, Kim, and several other relatives emerged from their plane after other passengers had disembarked. The entourage quickly entered an elevator in the airport terminal. Local media reported family members were driven across the tarmac and out of the airport, evading the press that had gathered in the arrival hall. Mara Buxbaum, Ledger’s publicist, has said the family wants to keep funeral arrangements private, and Michelle Williams, the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, has requested privacy for those in mourning. The family will reportedly hold a private ceremony and either bury Ledger’s remains or have them cremated and interred at the family’s plot at a cemetery in Perth, where his two grandparents lie. Ledger, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in “Brokeback Mountain,” died in his New York City apartment Jan. 22. He was 28. Authorities suspect a drug overdose, but toxicology tests are still pending. Police said several prescription drugs were found in the apartment where his body was found. As Ledger’s hometown prepared for his funeral, residents expressed sadness at his sudden death, and outrage at rumors that he was a drug user.Ledger was a source of pride for Perth, a metropolis of some 1.3 million people that lies on the edge of Australia’s vast Outback and is thousands of miles from the nearest major city.”It’s probably the biggest news we’ve had in Perth in a long time,” said Shannon Harvey, film critic at The Sunday Times. “He’s probably the highest-profile star who’s ever come out of Perth.”

Britney Spears got her stay in a psychiatric ward extended further as doctors decided to keep her hospitalized an additional 14 days. Spears was to be released from UCLA Medical Center’s psychiatric hospital, but doctors and a medical officer at the ward determined that she should remain, said the spokesman. Spears was committed for a 72-hour hold for evaluation. Paramedics, flanked by a police escort of about a dozen officers on motorcycles, in cars and a helicopter, took Spears from her home to the psychiatric hospital before dawn. To extend her stay, hospital staff members cited a section in the state law that allows patients to be retained for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others.
